Filter Value Management #
Requires Preferred license.
Filter Value Management lets you control exactly which values appear in your search filter dropdowns. You can remove values visitors don’t need, rename labels for clarity, and refresh values from your shelter system’s API.
Accessing Filter Value Management #
- Go to PetMatchPro > Filter Values tab in admin settings.
- This tab is only visible with a Preferred license.

What You Can Do #
Exclude Values #
Remove specific values from appearing in filter dropdowns. For example, if your shelter never has ferrets, you can exclude “Ferret” from the species filter.
Rename Value Labels #
Change how a value displays in the dropdown without changing the underlying data. For example, rename “Domestic Short Hair” to “Shorthair” for brevity.
Refresh from API #
AnimalsFirst and RescueGroups include a Refresh Filter Values button that fetches the latest available values from your shelter system’s API. This updates your filter dropdowns to reflect any new breeds, species, or other values that have been added.

Managing Fields #
The Filter Values tab shows configurable fields per partner. Each field displays:
- The field name
- Number of values from the API
- Number of custom/virtual values you’ve added
- A visual indicator when overrides are applied
Click on a field to expand its value list and make changes.
Per-Partner Availability #
| Partner | Refresh Available | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PetPoint | Standard | Field customization only |
| AnimalsFirst | Yes – Refresh button | Fetches current values from AF API |
| RescueGroups | Yes – Refresh button | Loads breed/color values from RG API |
Best Practices #
- Refresh periodically – If your shelter adds new breeds or species, refresh to pull the latest values into your filter dropdowns.
- Exclude before renaming – Remove values you never want first, then rename what remains for clarity.
- Keep labels short – Custom labels appear in dropdowns where horizontal space is limited; aim for one or two words.
- Test on the front end – After saving changes, view a search page in an incognito window to confirm the dropdown reflects your edits without browser cache interference.
- Document your overrides – If multiple admins manage the site, keep a brief note of which fields you’ve customized so changes are not undone by accident.
